Al was born on July 7, 1938, in Santa Anna, TX. He was the son of Alfred Luther Godwin and Ella Maydell (Gray) Godwin. As a loving husband, father and grandfather, his life was centered around his family, church and business.
Al earned an MA in Education from North Texas State University where he was active in the Baptist Student Union. Upon graduation, he married his wife Jackie whom he met in the BSU and then began two years of service in the United States Navy. Returning to Texas, Al taught high school for two years and then moved to Nashville, TN for six years where he was a sales manager for the Southwestern Publishing Company (he had put himself through college working summers for this company—selling bibles door to door). Returning to Texas once again, Al and his two partners founded The Heritage Shop, which was recognized as “The Best Locally Owned Custom Tailors” by D Magazine in 1993. The Lord blessed the company and after 39 years Al retired. He was a member of the Plano International Rotary Club. For 32 years, he and Jackie have been active member of Prestonwood Baptist Church where he served as both a deacon and an usher.
Al loved the outdoors—visits to the farm (which has been in the family for over 100 years) outside Brownwood—and hunting. The farm is a family sanctuary and held many cherished memories for him with our children, grandchildren and friends. He loved to walk and exercise was paramount in his battle with Parkinson's. He loved competitive sports especially the game of basketball which allowed him to be on the Atlantic Fleet, Crudeslant team, during his years in the navy. A salesman at heart, Al never met a stranger and always had a smile for everyone.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jacqueline Ruth (Hawthorne) Godwin, sister, Jane Waddell of Granbury, TX, his son, Christopher W. Godwin and wife, Angela of Austin, TX, daughter, Amy R. Peek and husband Doug of West Chicago, IL, and seven grandchildren, Lainey, Avery and Riley Godwin and Jonathan, Basye, Hannah and Joshua Peek and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
