Mr. Albert R. Bean, affectionately called “Bookie”, was the oldest child born on May 4, 1936 to the parentage of the late Albert C. Bean and Sarah K. Bean. He had one sister “Edna C. Smith” preceding him in death.
Al was born in Colmesneil and later moved to Prairie View, TX. He later attended Prairie View College where he attended the Prairie View Training School. He received an award in Agricultural and Mechanical studies before moving to Dallas, TX. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1959. Later in life he began working for the VA hospital, and was asked to join the Air Force Reserve until 1987. Al could recall his long trips of flying back and forth to Panama and Japan to transfer injured soldiers back to the states, as if it had happened the day before with such excitement. He retired from the VA Hospital after 22 years of service.
Al united in marriage to Ms. Velma Shaw (Bean); to this union she brought a son, the late Eric Layton Shaw. Brother Al and his “sweetheart” Velma were married for 37 years. Their union remained faithful throughout the marriage, even during his sickness she remained dedicated, caring and loving until the end.
Al was a faithful member of the Jordan Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Sinclair James Oliver Royal, of Lancaster, TX. He received the “Man of The Year 2019” award from the deacons. The brothers from the church were always faithful in their prayers and visitations through the hospital visits which he cherished. By the Grace of God, Brother Bean confessed Christ at an early age and remained a faithful servant throughout his life. He loved serving in the church.
He leaves to cherish his loving memories: Wife, Velma Marlene Bean, sister, Amy Boykin (Cecil), brothers: Dale R. Bean (Charlotte), James W. Bean (Gwendolyn), and Richard C. Bean (Joyce). A host of nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends that will cherish his memory.
Special Thanks: Johnnie Fore of Cliff View Church of Christ for her daily support, Karen Collins for the meals and continuous support and her son Bryan Jackson for keeping Uncle’s hair looking good and their love and kindness they contributed during his illness.
