Alan Michael Utay, son of Ervin and Trudy Utay of blessed memory, was born on February 23, 1965. He attended Hillcrest High School and received his BBA from the University of Texas, Business Honors Program in 1987. He received his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law in 1990. Immediately following graduation, he joined Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP where he became a corporate and securities partner. In 2001, he was recruited by one of his clients, Alliance Data, as General Counsel and also served as Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for the company.
Alan was a gifted and widely respected attorney and mentor. He was named one of the “Best Lawyers Under 40” by D Magazine in 2002, received the “Best General Counsel” award from the Dallas Business Journal in 2004, and appeared numerous times in the list of “Texas Super Lawyers” published annually by Texas Monthly.
A natural leader, Alan served on various community boards including LaunchAbility (formerly Special Care and Career Services) and the Planning and Allocations Committee of the Jewish Federation of Dallas. He was recently asked to serve as a trustee and executive committee member of the Children’s Medical Center of Dallas Foundation.
Far beyond any corporate or legal contributions, Alan was a loving husband to Stacy “Sam”, doting father to their three-year-old son, Hank, supporting member of a large and close extended family, and valued friend to many. He enjoyed spending time outdoors with his family and friends—boating, fishing, hiking and snow skiing. Alan was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. It is a crushing understatement to say that he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife Sam, son Hank, brother Joe (Carol) Utay, sister Karen Utay, sisters-in-law Fran (Jeff) Toubin and Cindy (Gary) Greenberg, mother-in-law Carol Miller, nieces Andrea Utay, Mollie and Dani Toubin, Haley Greenberg and nephew, Jake Greenberg, and numerous relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, Total Learning Centers Scholarship Fund (Pittsburgh, PA), LaunchAbility, or Community Homes for Adults, Inc. (CHAI).
Arrangements under the direction of Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, Dallas, TX.
