5/12/1923 to 11/8/2016
Born in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, Bob grew up on the family farm in the town of Plainfield where his family had resided in the same house for generations. He often spoke of the joy of growing up there with his siblings and many friends. He graduated from Sanderson Academy, part of a class of eight students.
Shortly after graduation, he went to work in a manganese mine, but this was short-lived when Uncle Sam called him to duty. He entered the army in 1943 and saw combat in France and Germany.
After an honorable discharge in 1946, on a whim he came to California at the invitation of his sister who was already living here. It was not long after his arrival in Los Angeles that he met a tall, beautiful red-head named Louise. They married in 1948, moved into their house on Herbert Street in Mar Vista in 1950 where he resided until just three weeks ago, a total of 66 years. During that time he and Louise had two children, Judy and Lori, and formed relationships with friends and neighbors that have lasted for decades.
Bob worked for many years in the construction industry before starting work in the customer service department at B&B Hardware in Culver City. At B&B, he did everything from fixing locks to cutting screens. He retired in 1985. Then the real fun began! He and Louise traveled all over the country in their trailer, often in a caravan with close friends.
Besides traveling, Bob enjoyed watching the Dodgers and making furniture. But most especially did he love to visit and talk. He was a master story-teller, regaling his family and friends with stories of his childhood and his travels. In recent years, when he could no longer travel, he scooted around the neighborhood on his BuzzAround XL, visiting with everyone who came across his path.
He was a man of great generosity and kindness with an incredible work ethic. You could always count on him to do what he said he would do.
Robert Gloyd truly exemplifies the spirit of The Greatest Generation.
