It is with great sadness that the family of George Edwin Julian announces his passing on August 28, 2020 after bravely fighting both illness and injury. George was born November 15, 1941 to Irwin and Ellen Rhoda Julian in San Diego, California and grew up in their family home in Topanga Canyon. He attended Pierce College and graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona with a major in Biology and minor in Chemistry. He was also fortunate to have the opportunity to spend an unforgettable semester on the Yucatan Peninsula and in Central America studying entomology and the biology of the area. He loved the time he spent there and had many stories of adventures and his love of the cultures and people he encountered. Later, while working full time, with a family, he returned to school and obtained his Masters Degree from California State University Dominguez Hills.
George was active in the Griffith Park Travel Town Train Club, flew model airplanes, and volunteered at the Morro Bay Marine Mammal Center. At the Marine Mammal Center, he and Carol would assist in the rescue of sea otters, seals and sea lions. One time, George's leg was broken while he was attempting to rescue an injured sea lion in treacherous surf. Later and undaunted, George would drive and assist in transporting injured or orphaned sea mammals for rehabilitation in Sausalito. He loved animals; each dog was his “favorite.” His other passions were varied and included, raising orchids, gems and minerals, fine food, wine, and antiques.
George was able to spend his retirement years with his wife Carol in their home in Grover Beach California. George and Carol delighted in sharing the beauty of the Central Coast with family and friends. Each visit was enhanced with a new sightseeing adventure, restaurant, antique store, or winery.
George Julian is remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. George had a great sense of humor which was subtle and understated, like himself. He enjoyed people and was respected and liked by all who met him. He was loved and will be missed.
George is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol Ann Julian and their two children, Glen Edwin Julian and Cindy Ann Julian and his four grandchildren, James, Sarah, Jason, and Katelyn.
