Rev. Virgil Wilson died Tuesday morning September 25, 2018 at UVa- Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was born May 29, 1928 at Cow Creek, Estill County, KY. He was one of ten children of Cornelius and Katherine Benton Wilson.
After spending his formative years working on his father's livestock and tobacco farm on Logana Road near Nicholasville, KY, he was invited to serve his nation on December 22, 1950. After serving two years in the Army Security Agency in Arlington Hall, he was discharged on January 7, 1953. Then on January 10, 1953 he married the love of his life, Ruth Bunch at Arlington Baptist Church.
Arlington Baptist Church licensed him to preach on February 3, 1954, thus beginning a ministry of over 60 years. He graduated in 1958 from the University of Richmond and then attended the Southern Baptist Seminary at Wake Forest, NC. His ministry included churches in both Virginia and North Carolina as well as teaching at the Columbia Bible College in Fayetteville, NC.
Virgil was predeceased by his parents, eight siblings, and his partner in life and ministry, Ruth. He is survived by two brothers, Fred Wilson of Harrodsburg, KY and Glenn Wilson of Nicholasville, KY. Also, surviving are his four sons, Paul V. Wilson of Glen Allen, VA; Ronald E. Wilson and wife Janice of Rhoadesville, VA; David C. Wilson and wife Kathleen of Fuquay Varina, NC; and Dwight Timothy Wilson and wife, Charissa of Clayton, NC; one step-grandson, Austin Fulford of Clayton, NC; five grandchildren: Rebecca Wilson Dillard (Breck) of Gardendale, AL; Natalie Wilson Helms (Anthony) of Oakboro, NC; Madeline Ruth Wilson of Littleton, CO; Caleb Wilson of St. Just, VA; and Sarah Wilson Houchins (Benjamin) of Chesterfield County, VA; two great-granddaughters, Kaleigh Soto of Gardendale, AL and Carlie Tillman of Oakboro, NC. Ruth and Virgil are survived by Ruth's sisters, Frances B. Walters of Culpeper and Ada B. Brown of Glen Allen, VA and many nephews and nieces
The funeral service will be held at Open Door Baptist Church, 754 Germanna Highway, Culpeper, VA at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 29, 2018 following a family visitation time between 11:00 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Officiating the service is Rev. Alan Roberts of Autryville, NC.
Serving as pallbearers are Paul, Ron, David, Tim, and Caleb Wilson, and Ben Houchins. Honorary Pallbearers are George Butler, Carol Benson, and Keith Wagner.
In lieu of flowers, Virgil requested that donations be made to: Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911. Virgil also requested that we be mindful of Phillipians 2:11, "that every tongue should confess that JESUS CHRIST is LORD, to the glory of GOD the Father”.
