Patricia M Aitken, age 82, of Culpeper Virginia passed away on November 2, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was born on October 13, 1940, in Stamford Connecticut. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Samuel R. Aitken; her parents Charles A. Murphy and Mary R. Murphy; and her sister, Martha Whelan.
Pat grew up in Stamford, Connecticut and spent summers in Chatham Massachusetts where she enjoyed sailing, tennis and riding. She graduated from Trinity College, Washington DC, with BA in Mathematics and Economics. She began her business career working as Financial Analyst for General Motors Corporation, New York 1962-1967. She moved with her family to Culpeper in 1970, where she raised her family and continued her business interest, combined with love of horses, working as the production manager for the Rapidan River Farm Digest. In late 1978 she began a business manager position with the Culpeper News, later Culpeper Star Exponent, which led to an almost 35+ year career with the media industry, retiring 2015 from Media General.
During her life she enjoyed reading, knitting, needlepoint, was an amazing cook, loved to bake and spend time with her grandson. Pat cherished her ability to give back to her community. In 1983, Pat and Sam helped found the Hospice of the Rapidan, which now has expanded to Hospice of the Piedmont. Pat was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, where she assisted in the business office and served on numerous committees throughout the years. She was a member of the Culpeper Dawn Lions Club and served on the Culpeper County Planning Commission from 1992-1998.
She is survived by her daughters, Laura Quarantillo and husband Robert of Leesburg; Kacey Jenkins and husband Marshall of Culpeper; grandson, Erich Jenkins of Madison; sister Laura Gould and husband Jeff of St. Petersburg, FL; brother Tony Murphy and wife CeCe of Chatham, MA; and several special nieces and nephews.
A time of visitation will be held at the Clore-English Funeral Home, Thursday November 17th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A funeral liturgy will be held at Precious Blood Catholic Church, 114 East Edmondson Street, Friday, November 18, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow at the Culpeper National Cemetery, New Grounds.
