Otis Lee Burke

Otis Lee Burke, 89, of Culpeper passed away on September 28, 2021 at The Culpeper, a continuing care community. He was born on September 2, 1932 at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis Holtzman Burke and Mary Ruth Hoffman Burke, and his brother, Carrol Humphries Darnold.
Otis is survived by beloved wife, Mescal Dugan Burke; son, Jeffrey Burke and wife, Kris of Orange; his daughter, Tamera Halstead and her husband, Jeff, of Virginia Beach; and grandchildren, Robin Harrell, Carly Burke, Phillip Smith, and Ian Burke.
Otis graduated from Culpeper High School in 1949, attended Bridgewater College, and served four years in the USAF. After a brief career in casualty insurance, he founded his real estate business, Otis Burke Realty in 1959. The following year he expanded into the building business.
During his time in business, he served on the boards of Culpeper National Bank and Jefferson Savings and Loan, was president of the local Piedmont Board of Realtors, president of the Retail Merchants Association, and served as a member of the Culpeper Town Council. He also served on many other civic organizations. Most meaningful to him was his lifelong membership in the Culpeper Baptist Church where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher, as well as on other committees.
Otis loved boating and traveling with Mescal, and he loved his children and grandchildren.
A private memorial service for family will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please give to the Parkinson’s Association.
