He was born in Salamanca, NY to Robert Benton Smith and Anna Frederika (Heidrick) Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Smith, and three children, Michael D. Smith, Jr.; Jeremy T. Smith; and Adrienne E. Smith. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Brianna N. Hackley, Jessica L. Smith, Destinee J. Terrell, Christopher J. Smith and Nikolas Smith.
In years past, he was an avid gardener and spent many hours canning and cooking all that he grew. He also spent many hours at the soccer field with his granddaughters.
A family celebration is planned for a later date.
