Joyce Ann Hawkins Haney, 83, was born in Charlottesville, Virginia and passed away on January 4, 2023, at a Fairfax nursing home. Joyce suffered a debilitating stroke in May 2021. Her adored husband, Charles Lindbergh Haney, passed away in 1986. Together they raised six children: Deborah, Ceresa (husband Richard Williams), Chuck (wife Donna), Kimberly Garrett, Gaines (wife Deborah), and Shannon. Two infants died at birth, Ken Gunner and a stillborn son. Joyce had five grandchildren: Charles Eric Haney (wife Brandi), Casey Haney (partner Curtis Minor), Chelsea Haney, Caylen Haney, and Mandy Hopkins (husband Harry). Joyce’s great grandchildren are Laiken Minor, Arianna Minor, Savannah Kyle, Zoey Nave, Hunter Haney, Henry Haney, Bryleigh Gentry, Levi Blackburn, Hayden Hopkins, and Peyton Hopkins.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents John A. Hawkins and Phoebe Simms Woodward Hawkins, three brothers including her twin John A. Hawkins, Jr, Franklin, and Marion Lee Hawkins. Joyce is survived by sisters Shirley Irby and Lucille Brooks.
After raising her children and becoming a widow at 46, Joyce went to work for Plow & Hearth Catalog company, a Madison, VA based catalog company specializing in indoor/outdoor home décor and garden accents. She loved her job of 25 years working as a telephone sales and customer service representative. Joyce loved sharing stories of the interesting people she “met” on the phone. Joyce was an avid baseball fan, especially UVA baseball and the Washington Nationals. She loved playing softball with her church league, playing catcher into her late 60’s. Joyce was a life-long member of Calvary Baptist Church, Orange, VA.
Joyce was a great cook, especially a baker. She was renowned for made-from-scratch pies, cherry and chocolate, as well as her coconut cakes. Her children have memories of waking up to the smell of cinnamon Bundt cake baking, prepared for the school lunches. There was always a fresh dessert for dinner each evening, fudge, gingerbread. She generously shared desserts with family, friends, neighbors and sometimes strangers.
Joyce loved all animals and cared for many pets over the years including a skunk, goose, ponies, and many cats and dogs. If anyone wishes to make a donation in Joyce’s memory, please contribute to Orange County Animal Shelter, 11362 Porter Road, Orange, VA 22960 or online via orangecountyva.gov.
The family thanks the staff of Fairfax Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for their compassionate, dedicated, and familial care of our mother.
