2024 at his beloved home. He was born on November 7, 1931 in Monongahela, PA. He
is predeceased by an infant son, Sylvia Victor,his wife of 54 years, and his sister Virginia
Lash. He is survived by his daughter Lesley Dawson and son-in-law Bill Dawson of
Centreville, VA, and grandchildren Matthew and Mark Dawson.
John graduated from Penn State University with a major in Economics. He then
served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany. This led to his 30 year career
with the US Department of Agriculture, retiring as a Senior Budget Analyst. He was
blessed to have over thirty years of very active retirement.
John loved his Catholic faith and family, his alma mater Nittany Lions, and
generations of beagles that shared everything outdoors with him. He served his
community for decades, as a volunteer CCD teacher, also by in-person prison ministry,
and as a driver for patients without transportation. John will be locally remembered as
an active volunteer and member of Precious Blood Catholic Church of Culpeper, VA.
John’s family is deeply grateful for the years of support from his network of
neighbors and the veteran support group Heroes Bridge, who helped him live
independently in the home he loved.
A visitation for John will be held Tuesday, August 20, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a wake at 6:00PM at Clore-English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway, Culpeper, Virginia 22701. A funeral mass will occur Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Precious Blood Catholic Church, 114 East Edmondson Street, Culpeper, Virginia 22701. An interment will occur Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Monongahela Cemetery, Monongahela, PA.
