John was born September 11, 1931 in Lignum, to Osey Garfield Myers and Clara Lee Lewis Myers. John grew up in the Myersville area spending his free time at the baseball diamond nearby, at first watching his brothers and cousins play and later joining in himself. This love of baseball carried on throughout his life and was matched only by his affection for the Washington Redskins. When not following professional sports John could be found bird hunting with his favorite dogs Lady and Spot.
John’s livelihood was one that brought him great pleasure. His first job was on a construction site and he turned that experience into a profession that would support his family for the rest of his life. John was best known for his expertise in home flooring through the business Floor Concepts, which he founded and operated along with his sons for over 30 years. John loved to build things. He took great pride in being able to build a house or barn from the ground up, tending to all of the plumbing, electrical, carpentry and flooring needs with only the help of his longtime employee, Brundage or “Mr. B”.
On January 25, 1951, John married Catherine Shuman Haught. They went on to build a home in Culpeper and raise their family. John was active in the Culpeper Jaycees and served as that organization’s president in 1961. He was a member of the Culpeper United Methodist Church, had a love of spiritual music, horses, and his grandchildren.
Surviving John are his children, Phillip Warren Myers and his wife Carol, Catherine Sue “Kitty” Myers, Martha Brown Alderson and her husband Kent Alderson, Sandra Carroll “Tim” Smoot and her husband Bucky Smoot, Paige Musette Myers and her partner Jack Inskeep, and John Andrew “Andy” Myers, all of whom are from Culpeper.
