Dorothy Kemmerer Ziegler

Dorothy (Dot) K. Ziegler – 99 years old, of Culpeper and formerly of Arlington, Virginia, passed away at The Culpeper retirement community on Saturday, September 25, 2021. Born in Steinsburg, PA, on February 10, 1922, she was the daughter of Thomas and Carrie (Benner) Kemmerer. On November 28, 1940, she married Levern L. Ziegler of Souderton, PA.

Dorothy attended school in Steinsburg and Quakertown, PA. She worked as a secretary for the Federal Government in the Departments of the Navy, Army and Air Force from 1942-1952. Later, she was a Legal Secretary in Washington D.C. and worked in property management for M.T. Broyhill and Sons in Arlington, VA.

Dorothy and Levern lived in Norfolk, VA, during WWII, then moved to Arlington to raise their family. They retired to Culpeper in 1989.

During her years in Culpeper, Dot was a member of the United Methodist Church of Culpeper. She was an avid volunteer for the Culpeper Hospital Auxiliary, contributing more than 6,000 hours of service. Dot also enjoyed being part of the Culpeper Women’s Club and the Christian Women’s Club.

Dorothy is loved and mourned by her daughters, Jane (Gary) Watson of Barre, VT, and Judy (Gary) Marston of Ashland, VA; grandchildren, David (Kristen) Watson, and Julie Watson of Vermont; Carrie Marston, and Charles (Jamie) Marston of Virginia. She also leaves four great-grandchildren, Catie, Chase, Everett, Luke, and a nephew Tom (Sherry) Will of Virginia.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Levern in 2008 and her sister Mae in 2007.

A memorial service celebrating Dorothy’s life will be held in the Spring of 2022, the year in which she would have had her 100th birthday. Interment will be at the National Cemetery in Culpeper.

Donations in Dorothy’s name may be made to the Culpeper United Methodist Church.

Her family wishes to thank Hospice of the Piedmont and especially The Culpeper, both staff and friends, for all their support during Dorothy’s years there. She said she could not think of a better place to live.
