Mrs. Tharp was born February 26, 1936, in Blairsville, Pennsylvania, moving to Culpeper with her family
when she was about 10 years old. Her life was filled with mainly two things—work and family. She
worked for 25 years for Rental Uniform Service in Culpeper, where she was known for making the
embroidered emblems for the uniforms, retiring in 1986. She then moved to Fairfax, Virginia, and gave
exemplary service for 21 years to the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office for the City of Fairfax, retiring in
2011 at the age of 75.
While she loved music, horoscopes, baseball (especially the Nats), dogs, ear muffs, Nutty Buddies,
meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and iced tea, most important to her was her family. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Harry Lee Tharp, her beloved brother James D. Hunter and his wife, Dixie, and her
mother and stepfather, Marie and Malcolm Scot. She leaves behind her daughters, Bernice Tharp Utz
(Chip), Debra Tharp Shadle (Mark), and Linda Tharp Dennis (Terry); five cherished grandchildren, Brad
Dowell (Jen) of Haymarket, VA, Lisa Dowell Nicholson (Tony) of Ashburn, VA., Gabriele deToll (Jason) and
Ian deToll (Farren) of Culpeper, and Zachary Dennis (Nora) of Odessa, TX. She has eleven great
grandchildren: Mya, Mason and Marin Dowell; Riley and Kieran Nicholson; Zina, Luke, and Avah Rankins;
Anise Dennis; and Ethan and Conner deToll.
She is also survived by a sister, Rosemarie White (Buddy) of Gainesville, VA; a brother, Jerry Scot, of
Charlotte, NC; a niece, Rachelle White of Los Angeles, CA; and an aunt, Nancy Schlesinger of Vacaville,
CA.
She was one of a kind and will be missed and lovingly remembered by her family, who surely will be
telling Carroll stories forever.
The family has entrusted Clore-English Funeral Home with a private interment at Fairview Cemetery
where she will be laid to rest with her parents.
