

Funeral Services for Mr. W.O. “Bill” Buettner, age 84 of Cullman, will be Sunday, November 27, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with Pastor Warren Ruland officiating. Burial will follow at Cullman City Cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Mr. Buettner died on Thanksgiving November 24, 2011 at his residence, surrounded by his wife, sons, and daughter in laws. He was born on August 21, 1927 in Cullman County to William Oscar Buettner, Sr. and Mattie Lee (Vinsant) Buettner. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Cullman, where he ministered in various roles: president of the church, a member of the building committee, and church elder. He was instrumental in helping start St. Paul’s School and provided services as president of the school board. In addition he taught Sunday School for many years and served as superintendent. He also worked with the Boy Scouts.
Mr. Buettner was part owner of Buettner Brothers Lumber Company where he performed as president and worked for forty two years until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Buettner was a member of the Rotary Club for fifty years, serving as president, and was most proud of achieving forty years perfect attendance and being a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served on the Board of Directors at Cullman Savings and Loan, attended the University of Alabama, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert and one daughter-in-law, Debra.
Survivors include his Wife of 63 years – Bobbie Segler Buettner of Cullman; two 2 – Sons – Jeff (Sabrina) Buettner of Hartselle and Charles (Sherry) Buettner of Cullman; one Brother – Richard (Barbara) Buettner, one Sister-in-Law – Jeanette Buettner; three 3 – Grandchildren – Melanie Buettner, Brannon (Autumn) Buettner, and Austin Buettner.
A woodworker, Mr. Buettner will fondly be remembered for his handmade Christmas ornaments and crosses he made each year for family and friends. It is fitting Mr. Buettner died on Thanksgiving as he was thankful for every day of his life and all the many blessings given to him.
In Lieu-of-Flowers, the family request donations be made to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or School.
Pallbearers will be Brannon Buettner, Austin Buettner, John McPhillips, Jimmy Barnes, John Buettner and David Bice.
