Mrs. Mitchell was born Jan. 29, 1922, in Walker County to Ted and Testie Phillips. She was the oldest of seven children. Ruby passed from this life Sunday, March 25, at Morningside Assisted Living. She married O.P. Mitchell in 1941. The onset of World War II soon interrupted the young couple’s life. During the war years, O.P. served overseas in the U.S. Army. Ruby supported her country and family by joining other young wives in the workforce. O.P. and Ruby were married for 65 years when, in 2006, he preceded her in death. Ruby excelled in accounting and worked in that capacity for most of her adult life. She was the accountant for the Cullman County Schools’ Child Nutrition Program for many years. She enjoyed politics and is distinguished as the first woman ever elected to the Cullman County Board of Education. She was a lover of books and a voracious reader. She enjoyed music, a good laugh, and most especially, time with family and friends. She loved and was loved by the staff and residents of Morningside Assisted Living. The staff at Morningside, especially Barbara Moore, excelled in caring for Ruby. Their care, kindness and love will always be appreciated and treasured by her family.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Tava Lakey.
Survivors include two children, Phil (Barbara) Mitchell and Sheila (Del) Brock; three sisters, Georgie Brown, Jewel Knight and Bette Smith; a brother, Charles Phillips; three grandchildren, Kelly (Tony) Shadix, Amber Mitchell and Nathan (Elizabeth) Brock; three great-grandchildren, Brock (Nicole) Shadix, Noah Shadix and Kathryn Shadix; and a great-great-grandchild, Keaton Shadix.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Childhaven Children’s Home, P.O. Box 2070, Cullman, AL 35056.
