Richard was born in Guin, AL, on June 17th, 1932 to parents William Claud Gann and Annie Mae Gann. His mother Annie Mae passed away during childbirth, and he was raised as an only child by his father and adoptive mother Jewel Gann. While attending Guin High School, he enjoyed playing football before joining the United States Navy during his senior year of high school.
He served as an Aviation Machinist Mate in the Korean War between 1950-1954 and was stationed aboard the aircraft carriers USS Essex and USS Sicily. His time in the Navy helped establish his strong love of country, work ethic, and mechanical mindset that helped him throughout his career and life.
Known for his fun-loving personality (and ability to dance the “jitterbug”), Richard went on to marry the love of his life Bennie Sue (Gilbert). Richard and Bennie Sue were happily married for over 64 years and had two children Barron Gann (married to Lisa) and Vonda Kay Padgett (married to Johnny) whom they lovingly raised and were the pride of his life.
Working as a building supply salesman for many years, Richard was known as a hard worker and a big dreamer. An avid fisherman in his younger days, he loved to relax by going fishing with friends and family. He was an active member of the community and served on the Cullman Housing Authority among other activities. In 1982, he purchased Bear Concrete Products, Inc., otherwise known as Bear Block in Cullman, AL. He poured his heart and soul into building and growing the company into the success it is today. A natural born businessman, he cherished the many friendships and relationships that were developed over the past 40 years of owning Bear Block. In true Richard fashion, his only funeral request was that the service be held on a weekend so that no one would have to miss work to attend.
As important as Bear Block was to him, it was his friends, family, and faith that mattered most. For decades he and a group of good friends would meet each morning at either Cracker Barrel or Jack’s to enjoy coffee and fellowship. Quick witted and full of country charm, he loved to laugh and made those around him feel at ease.
He was an amazing Papa to his four grandsons Gannon Padgett, Heath Padgett, Weston Padgett, and Dee Gann. They were his pride and joy and he enjoyed spending quality time with each of them. He loved going to the lake, watching their basketball games, dreaming about old cars, discussing history, and, of course, enjoying a good meal.
Most important to Richard, though, was his faithfulness to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He loved the Lord and was a cheerful giver. He and Bennie Sue loved their church and have been active members at East Side Baptist for over 48 years.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 14th, 2023 at East Side Baptist Church in Cullman, AL. The visitation will begin at 9:00am followed by the memorial service at 11:00am. The family requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers to East Side Baptist Church (mail checks to: ESBC, 1111 3rd St. SE, Cullman, AL 35055 designated on behalf of Richard Gann) or one’s favorite charity.
