Celebration of Life services for Mildred Russell Van Zandt Holmes will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at St. Andrews United Methodist Church, the Revs. Chuck Canterbury and Jonathan Todd officiating, with interment in Welti Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Mrs. Holmes will lie in state from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Holmes died Sunday, April 24, at UAB Medical Center in Birmingham. She was born June 15, 1925, in Welti to Roy and Edna Hightower Russell. She was a homemaker and mother, and for many years served her neighborhood as an Avon representative. She was active for many years in the Welti Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and was currently a member at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Cullman. She was also a member of Cullman Chapter No. 35, Order of the Easter Star. She had a strong and determined spirit, and was guided by her faith. She was a loving and kind mother, grandmother and friend. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert L. Van Zandt; and a brother, James H. Russell.
Survivors include her husband, Shelmer Holmes; two sons, Donald (Rhonda) Van Zandt of Baileyton and Steven Van Zandt of Washington, D.C.; two grandsons, Joshua (Ashley) Van Zandt of Alabaster and Jeffery Van Zandt of Huntsville; two great-grandsons, Jaxon and Reid Van Zandt; a sister-in-law, Audia Russell; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Andrews United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
