It was always hard to not be the oldest, nor the youngest. Growing up with my cousins, I floated somewhere near the bottom of the pack. At 8 years old, we ran around and made lots of noise. We ate sticky ice cream and then touched things like walls or the furniture where people sat. I always seemed to get gum stuck in my hair or have an earache. As I grew, my legs outgrew the rest of me. I was proportioned like a heron with all the grace of a bull in the china shop. Isn't it funny how we remember these things, even as we are adults and that was so many years ago? But Uncle Joe was different. He saw past those things; he always had a smile and a funny joke. He included everyone, so that no one felt left out. On one such visit to his home, my older sister, Charlotte and cousin Tammy left to go hang out with the big kids, the cool kids, the kids I couldn't fit in with. Karen had already gone to one of her friend's houses, and there I sat: on the greenish shag carpet of the living room. For the next few hours, I would have to sit quietly- Make no noise-Pretend I wasn't there. I was miserable. Then, my Uncle Joe called me over and asked me to play chess. I didn’t know how, but he just smiled. With the patience of Job, he taught me how to play over the next 2 hours. He even let me win the second game so convincingly I thought I had really won. He was always encouraging and often remarked how smart I was. He told me to keep practicing and playing. I left his house that day feeling 10 feet tall. I felt like I was someone, smart and important - not the awkward, gangly kid that I was. So, how do I put into words what Uncle Joe put into my heart that day? I guess there are no words beyond this story here, which I feel encapsulates the essence of Joe. I am sure my story is not unique. Uncle Joe has a legacy that will live on in many hearts, and in my respect and admiration,  I  hope I can and always will pass it on. I love you and miss you Uncle Joe, <3 Your Beanie

Pa was a loving grandfather and an inspiration. I strive to live a life as full as his and I try to live by the values he taught me. We can all go on about how impactful he has been to those around him. It was apparent to me even as a young child. Pa had a friend in almost every room he walked into, and if he didn't, he'd probably have one by the time he left. That's just the kind of man he was. He was generous, personable, stoic, wise, and always willing to go out of his way to help someone in need. He will be dearly missed.

I became acquainted with Joe through my job.   Leroy (as we all lovingly called him) was always a pleasure to see and could certainly add a little mischievousness to our day.  He made the best homemade biscuits,and jam and his  “roadkill” dumplings and “possum eye” pie were a treat beyond compare.  I have many fond memories of Joe.  I wish his daughters and Sheila comfort during this time.  I know he loved each of you in a very special way.  I will forever think of him and smile.

I had the privilege and honor of taking care of Mr. Joe at the end of his life.  He was a remarkable man and easy to care for.  His daughters provided excellent care for their father.  He said “ I appreciate my daughters and all they do “

Uncle Joe lived his dreams. "A life well-lived is a life remembered with love."  Losing someone you love is like losing a part of yourself.  We will miss him and who he was.  Nothing will ever replace that.

Joe has been my neighbor, church friend, & fellow Rotarian for many years. He was the kindest man. Always looking out for his friends and neighbors. I’ll never forget how excited he was for our “young family” to move in near him. He said he loved having kids nearby- playing, laughing, riding their bikes. He watched over everyone and loved to stand in the yard to visit.
