Born in 1931, she grew-up and attended Northwestern University, where she received a degree in Education upon graduation. She never lost her enthusiasm for her alma mater, remaining an ardent fan of Northwestern football until her death.
During her junior year, she met future husband Sheldon Mix at a New Year's Eve party. They eventually married in 1954. Four children followed, Randall, Kim, Dana and Sherry. As they grew and began their own lives, Joyce returned to the field of education as a teacher's aide in the late-seventies.
She spent the next twenty-years in that capacity, delighted to again be spending time with children and shaping their lives. Following her retirement, she and Sheldon left Park Ridge and moved to Crystal Lake to be nearer their grandchildren. John and Kaitlyn were the source of much joy, and Joyce was never happier than while doting on them.
Beyond children, some of Joyce's many interests were gardening, old movies, mysteries, celebrating the seasons for their unique beauty and holidays. But she always held family foremost in her heart.
She is survived by four children and two grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by her husband Sheldon in 2012.
Visitation begins at 10 and the funeral service at 11 at Bethany Lutheran Church, 76 W. Crystal Lake Ave., Crystal Lake.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to either the Alzheimer’s Association, the Salvation Army or the Epilepsy Foundation.
