She was born on Nov. 8, 1929, in East St. Louis, to George and Laura (Spicer) Barton.
Like her father, she was a people person who loved music and became a music teacher in the Crystal Lake public schools. She loved flying in airplanes and watching sports, especially the Bears. She was a well-loved teacher who was a close friend, a good listener, and an advisor to many.
She is survived by her children, Richard and Dave (Sue) Childress; her sister, Vivian (Richard) Waltmire; her niece, Nancy (Ron) Wendt; and her great-nephew, Adam Wendt; her cousins, Robert Bussen and Betty Galley; and many dear friends, including many retired teachers.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Edmund Childress.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23 at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m.
Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hussman School, 131 Paddock St., Crystal Lake, IL 60014.
