Born March 27, 1916 in Annapolis, MD, she was the daughter of William H. and Mabel (Paxton) Chappell. In 1934, she graduated from Annapolis High School and on October 6, married the love of her life, Jack H. Anderson. For 22 years, they lived in Washington D.C. where they raised their two daughters, spending summers in Bay Ridge, Annapolis, MD with Dorothy’s parents at their waterfront home. In 1956, the family moved to Bay Ridge where they continued to enjoy friends, family, water sports, great Chesapeake culinary delights and their new church home, Heritage Baptist Church. In 1984, she and her husband moved to Gloucester, VA to live near their daughter, Carole.
Dorothy was an avid bridge player, crossword puzzle solver, bowler, dancer, and she lovingly crocheted numerous quilts and sweaters for her children and grandchildren. For years, she led exercise classes at her home up through her 88th birthday. In 2007, she moved to the Fountains at Crystal Lake in Illinois to live near her daughter, Arden.
Preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, she is survived by her daughters, Carole (Wayne) Gates of Gloucester, VA, and Arden (Bob) Spooner of Lake in the Hills, IL; her grandchildren, Mark (Marjo) Holthaus, David Holthaus, Jennifer Sekula and her husband (Kyle Rice), Rob (Claudia) Spooner, and Rick (Whitney) Spooner; and her eight great-grandchildren, Scott, Catherine, Skyler, Meghan, Cameron, Morgan, Samantha, and Sophia.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 29, at 1:30pm at Newington Baptist Church in Gloucester, VA. A family greeting and reception to follow after the service.
In lieu of flowers a donation in her memory may be given to Gloucester County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
