He is survived by his loving wife of almost 25 years, Melinda “Linda” Szakacs; daughters, Dina (Shawn) Luhtala, and Melissa (Sam) Terzioski; son, Jeff Szakacs; stepdaughters, Sarah Watts and Sureleen Stage (Abiel Trotter); sisters, Andrea, Mary and Pam Szakacs; eight grandchildren, Jordyn Willard, Jacob Szala, Alexis, Maya, Sienna and Samantha Terzioski, Aiden Watts, and Amarius Trotter; and one great- granddaughter, Sophia Willard.
Bill was preceded by his parents, Barb and Andy Szakacs; grandparents, Ernest and Goldie Goshen, and Joseph and Rose Szakacs; aunts and uncles, Mary Ann (John) Szakacs, Margaret (Edward) Mytych, Anna (Jack) Bray, Joseph (Eleanor) Szakacs, Steve (Florence) Szakacs, Robert (Judith) Szakacs, Helen Szakacs, Joseph Szakacs and Norma Jean (Glenn) Main; and godparents, Rose (John) Kocur.
Bill retired from US Steel after 43 ½ years of service. He started as a Triple A Welder and Pipefitter, and then moved on to Training Coordinator, Safety Manager, and finally, a Training Instructor of learner classes. He was proud of the showcase wall of graduation learner classes.
He was a graduate of Bloom High School class of 1967 in Chicago Heights, IL. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from Purdue University Northwest in Hammond, IN. His hobbies included working on anyone’s car - including his own - home repairs, painting (indoors and out) and working with wood, especially oak, his favorite.
His favorite cars were always Chevy Corvettes. His favorite radio station was Talk Radio, especially 105.9. He loved the SYFY Channel (Star Trek), as well as Fox News. Bill loved classic cars and old time Rock 'n' Roll music from the 60’s.
He cherished his family, and was loyal to his friends and co-workers. He was a good neighbor and loved to teach and read.
A visitation for Bill will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307. The funeral service will be Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at 10:00 am at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, with a burial at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens to follow.
