On October 17, 2023, God looked down from Heaven and saw that Nancy Gail Eakins was exhausted. He sent his angels down to rescue her from the dreadful disease of dementia. They ushered her into Heaven on their wings, where she now resides in the presence of her Lord and Savior.
Nancy was born in South Pittsburg, TN on June 20, 1942, to her parents Charles Letham and Betty Jean (Day) DePue. She was the oldest of five children. She graduated high school in 1961 from TF South in Lansing, Illinois. At the age of 21, she married the love of her life, Kenneth Edward Eakins, Sr. Together, they brought three children into this world. She was a beloved grandmother to five individuals who loved her dearly. Her life became even sweeter the day she became a great-grandmother. Being a devoted wife and mother became her life's mission. She would go to the ends of the earth for the people she cherished.
Nancy had two passions in life, shopping and animals. Quite honestly, she perfected the saying, "shop ’til you drop." When she would go, you could guarantee she knew where all the sales were and she would always buy more than she needed. She enjoyed it the most when she was shopping for her fur babies. Her animals were a huge part of her heart. She was known for taking in all the strays that came to her door. She enjoyed nursing them back to health and giving them a loving home.
When Nancy reached the gates of Heaven, she was greeted by her parents, Charles and Betty DePue; sister, Sandra Lindquest; brother, Charles William DePue; husband, Kenneth Edward Eakins, Sr.; daughter, Kimberly Jean Tompkins; and many other family and friends.
She is survived by her sister, Patricia Bes; brother, Geary Wayne DePue; her sons, Kenneth (Patricia) Eakins and Kelly Joshua Eakins; grandchildren, Jessieann Marie Eakins, Kenneth Edward Eakins, III, Kira Jean Coretta (Cole) Donaldson, Alexis Jordan Tompkins, and Parker Brooke Ann Tompkins; great-granddaughter, Saphira Jean Donaldson; and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Lake Hills Baptist Church, 9209 West 85th Avenue, Schererville, IN 46375.
Nancy's family would like to thank the Lafayette Soldiers Home for the love and care they gave her while she lived there. Our biggest comfort was knowing that you became her family when we couldn't be there. She loved each of you and it showed in her smile when you walked into her room, or greeted her in the hallway, took her to an activity or to church/bible study. You made her feel loved and we can never express our gratitude.
We would also like to thank Elara Caring Hospice Care. Your compassion allowed Nancy's last journey to be pain-free and dignified. From the bottom of our hearts, we will forever be thankful.
