John "Doug" is survived by his loving mother, Mary Lou Girard; sister, Lisa (Robert) Treadway; aunts, Nancy J. Gross, and Nancy (Will) Houldieson; cousins, Sheila (Casey) Dunn, Amy (Dean) Andrews, Andrea Gross, and Lyla Gross; and close family friend, William Kryspin.
Doug was preceded in death by his father, John A. Girard; paternal grandparents, Stanley and Louise Girard; maternal grandparents, Culver and Sally Gross; and his cousin, Glenn Gross.
Doug graduated from Crown Point High School in 1977 and went on to earn an associate degree from Indiana University Northwest. He had a passion for all cars, which he fostered by opening his own business. His passion for cars was shared by his employees, which made the work days pass quickly. When not at work, he relished cruising around in the summer in his old blue convertible with a cooler in the back. He loved the sand, sun, and beach anywhere, but his favorite was Clearwater Beach, FL. When he wasn't engaged with cars, he pursued art, mostly working with charcoal and watercolor supplies. Doug also loved traveling and was in the process of attaining the goal of attending a ball game in every major league park in the U.S. Growing up, he played his Gibson guitar with his grandfather Gross at family gatherings. He was active in scouting, swimming, karate, chess and, as an adult, Doug became an avide online chess player. You could count on him to always be enthusiastic about "hanging out" with his friends and keeping in touch with them. Doug cherished God, his family, friends, and his country.
