Ruth Lynch Carter, 97, passed away November 30, 2022 in Dunbar, West Virginia. Ruth Catherine Lynch, the second-oldest of seven children, was born in Columbus, Ohio on November 13, 1925 to Hattie Walker Lynch and Carl Lynch. At a young age, Ruth moved from Ohio to Cedar Grove, West Virginia with her family. At the untimely passing of her mother when Ruth was just 18, she became the matriarch of the family, raising her younger sisters. She graduated from Washington High School of Charleston in 1945.
She later met and married Harry Johnson Carter. They became parents to Sandra Helena Carter and Larry Gene Carter. A loving and devoted mother, she raised her children to become college-educated, successful professionals. Sandra loved teaching and ultimately become a counselor at Capitol High School and Larry achieved the rank of captain in the U.S. Army. Her dedication to her children was displayed by the special relationship they shared.
Professionally, Ruth maintained a more than 20-year career in law enforcement, serving as a Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputy and rising to the rank of Corporal.
In her spare time and after retiring, she enjoyed cooking, sewing, crafts, crocheting, home decorating and working in her yard. Her pleasant smile, warm personality, playful spirit and genuine love of life were some of her greatest assets. Not to forget, her signature 10-4 responses during her conversations with others.
She is survived by her grandson, Clark Smith, granddaughter Crystal Kae Carter, and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great grand-children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband, her children and her granddaughter, Shannon Hamilton. She was the last surviving sibling of James Eugene Lynch, Helen Lynch Leonard, Mable Lynch Austin, Roy Lynch, David Lynch and Mary Elizabeth Lynch.
Celebration of Ruth’s life will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 9, 2022 at Tyler Mt. Funeral Home with Celebrant HR Whittington presiding. Entombment will follow in Tyler Mt. Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Gathering of family and friends will be from 10 until time of service.
