Hobert Ernest "Hobbie" Smith, Jr., 65, of Tornado, passed away suddenly on April 26, 2016 while working as an electrician at the American Embassy in Beijing, China. He previously worked at the American Embassy in Moscow, Russia. He was born Feb. 26, 1951, the son of Hobart and Dorothy Smith, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Beverly Haynes. Hobbie was a 1968 graduate of St. Albans High School. He was a journeyman electrician and had a degree in computer science from N.I.T. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1970 to 1978. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Lynda Guthrie Smith of St. Albans; daughters, Erica Tweedy of Dunbar, Nicole Finney of Dunbar, Misty Rollins (Phillip) of Red House, Charity Young (Ricky) of St. Albans and Davina Kemp (Michael) of Elkview; sister, Sandy Smith of North Carolina; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and numerous friends around the world. Celebration of Hobbie’s life will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 6, at Highlawn Church of God, St. Albans, with Pastor Roy Young officiating. Burial will follow in Guthrie Cemetery with military graveside rites to be conducted by St. Albans VFW Post 6418 and American Legion Post 73. Gathering of family and friends will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans.
