She was born September 18, 1948 in Charleston, the daughter of Frank and Zelda Bias Milam. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Alba Wayne “Butchie” Milam, and sister Susan Jeanette McQuerry.
She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Mark E. Young, Jr., children, Loretta Susan Hunt (Jack), and Melissa Nicole Young (Scott), grandchildren, Milam Keenan Henry, Donovan Marshall Henry, and Jessica Dawn Hunt, and 5 great grandchildren and sisters, Carol Jean de la Riva, Jo Ella Knopp and Loretta Joyce Watson.
Barbara was a graduate from Nitro High School with the Class of 1966.
Barbara worked 28 years for the US Air Force at the National Museum of the United States Air Force as a Museum Technician. She took great pride in monitoring the largest collection of military artifacts in the world, keeping track of the artifacts that were on loan to outside organizations to ensure they were properly protected and displayed. She also traded excess items for goods and services to the museum, with her last major acquisition before retiring being obtaining the Memphis Belle aircraft.
In her home life, she enjoyed family gatherings, her grandchildren, reading, crocheting, computer puzzles and games. She loved camping and traveling with her best friend and life partner, Mark. She was his co-pilot on many long (or short) trips across our Great Country. She also acted as a surrogate “Mom” to numerous Girl Scouts, band kids, and strays.
Celebration of Barbara’s life will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at Tyler Mt. Funeral Home with Celebrant HR Whittington presiding. Burial will follow in Tyler Mt. Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Gathering of family and friends will be from 11 until time of service at the funeral home.
