Lawrence (Larry) Edwin Haynes was born in Powell, WY to Harold Lewis Haynes and Lorena May Cooley on Oct 10, 1934. Larry was 3 years old when his mother died, forcing their father to temporarily place his children in an orphanage. When his father remarried, Larry was reunited with his siblings (Shirley, Evelyn and David) and raised by his father and step mother.
Larry married Sara Jane Story on Nov. 13, 1954 and moved to California, where they started their family. Larry was employed by Rocketdyne during the years of the space race. He started work in the tool room, but had higher ambitions. He went to night school, studying drafting and taking the courses necessary to get an engineering job. He was promoted to draftsman and then to engineer while working at Rocketdyne. Larry and Sara divorced in 1965. Larry raised his three sons with the help of Franklin and Jeanette Story, Sara’s parents. Larry continued to work in the aerospace field, and was eventually promoted to director of engineering at Hydraulic Research and Manufacturing.
In 1974 Larry relocated to Maybell, Colorado, where he bought a ranch outside of Maybell. He worked his ranch while doing consulting work for a number of different aerospace companies. He sold his ranch and returned to aerospace work, living in California and Utah for several years while continuing to do consulting work. Larry passed away in Craig, Colorado, on Sunday, April 5, 2020. He is survived by his sons Dean Haynes of Cedar City, Utah, and Mark Haynes and Scott Haynes, both of Craig, Colorado.
