Please join us for a celebration of Kim’s life on September 10, 2022 @ 2:00pm at Piercy’s - Mt. Washington Funeral Home.
Husband of Elizabeth; Father of Julia, Devon, and Holly; Son of Rex and Sheila; Brother of Wendy, Kate, and Andrew
Born March 31, 1958 in Southport, England. By the age of 19 Kim had lived in 15 different locations with the first move being to New Zealand in 1961, a return to England in 1964 before immigrating to Edmonton, Canada in June of 1965.
As a child Kim was a bit of a rascal. Sister Wendy has memories of cheering for Kim as his Mum and Dad chased him about the house for something he had done. In New Zealand he had a mean dentist and bit him - something that his Mum was proud of when she learned of what was going on. He also refused to wear shoes his entire time in N.Z
In 1966 the family moved to Burnaby, B.C. and then Tsawwassen before moving to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia in the summer of 1972. Kim was in grades 9 - 11 in Dartmouth where his nickname was Flipits.
Grade 11 also saw Kim being selected by the rotary club to represent Dartmouth in Ottawa, Ontario but first he and the family had to become Canadian Citizens which proudly happened in 1974.
In 1975 Kim and his Dad returned to Delta, B.C. where he helped his dad build a house in North Delta while graduating from South Delta Senior Secondary High School and thankfully avoided a grade 13 that would have been required in Nova Scotia. The family joined Kim and their father Rex, in the summer of 1975.
Growing up Kim was a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Sea Cadet.
As a youth Kim played some soccer and badminton before focusing on field hockey, a sport that he continued through to university and for which he coached later in life. He later thought that the sport contributed to the troubles he had with his hand as he grew older. Kim also found a love for golf and became an avid skier.
A big fan of rock and roll music growing up, his sisters and brother remember his love for bands like Supertramp, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Kiss, and Foreigner which often prompted music wars throughout the house.
His first car was a red Ford Galaxy 500.
Kim was also a sports fan cheering for the Vancouver Canucks, Dallas Cowboys, Vancouver Whitecaps, and later in life the Liverpool Football Club. He would cheer for the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team and go to their minor league team, the Vancouver Canadians, games at Nat Bailey stadium. He also enjoyed going to New Westminster Bruin junior hockey games. He was a season ticket holder for the Vancouver Grizzlies basketball team during their first year and the Vancouver Canucks at the colosseum.
1976 saw Kim head to the University of British Columbia where he earned a Degree in Commerce and Transportation. Through the summers he would work as a deckhand for the Upper Lakes Shipping Company in Ontario. This was a step up from his first job at McDonalds. He earned enough to pay his way through university and live on the UBC campus where he also was the assistant manager of the UBC student pub known as the Pit. He graduated from UBC in 1982.
After graduating university Kim worked at several companies before focusing on a career working with publicly traded companies. Many of these were junior startups in the mining exploration sector. Holding a variety of executive positions, President, chief financial officer to Director, to name a few. This was a career that required a fair bit of world travel: India and Mexico being a couple of countries he visited through his work.
Kim married the love of his life, Elizabeth McKenzie on April 20, 1991 on the SS Eloquent. A beautiful yacht, moored at the Bayshore Marina. The couple and many family and friends cruised up the Indian arm in sparkling sunshine.
Kim and Elizabeth have 3 wonderful children. Julia Preston, Devon Alexandria and Holly Brianna. Kim was an active participant in the girls' upbringing. Tirelessly helping them with their homework, driving them to and from school and all their various activities, as well as coaching them in field hockey.
He moved with his family to the Comox Valley in 2002. Continuing his work with public companies.
In the last few years of his life he completely changed up his line of work and became a driving instructor. Deriving great pleasure teaching young and old, driving skills.
Kim will be missed. RIP
