An adventurous, outdoor youth was spent growing up in West Vancouver where he made many life long friends. After graduating from West Vancouver High School, John followed a career in the construction industry.
In 1991, he moved to the Comox Valley where he enjoyed and pursued an active outdoor lifestyle of hunting, fishing and playing golf. He also enjoyed being a member of the Courtenay Fish and Game Club.
John was predeceased by his mother Val Thomas, stepfather Glyn Thomas and older brother Roald Thomas. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by wife Nancy, sons Mike and Steve (Jenn), brother Ken (Lynn), sister Julie (Ron Olson), stepsons Jay Young (Ashleigh), Craig Young (Krystle) and stepdaughter Marnie (Drew Barker). Papa will be deeply missed by his grandchildren Marin, John, Alivia, Owen, and Lily, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews whom he dearly loved.
The family would like to thank the staff at the chemo unit of St. Joseph’s hospital, Drs. Bakshi and Burgess, care workers Sandy and Jessie, and Island Health nurses for the care and kindness extended to John.
A celebration of life will be held at Courtenay Baptist Church, 2963 Lake Trail Road on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 2:00 pm.
His months of working on the expansion project at Courtenay Baptist were happy and fulfilling, and resulted in valued friendships and an expanded community. If desired, in lieu of flowers, a donation in John’s memory to the Courtenay Baptist Church building fund would be appreciated.
