Janet Baker (nee McKinnon) of Denman Island has passed away. Originally from Arnprior, Ontario, she was a proud graduate of Arnprior District High School. She worked 30 years at both the Nova Scotia Bank branches in Arnprior and Ottawa. It was during her time in Ottawa that she crossed paths with her husband Les Baker, who worked as an engineer for the government. Upon retiring from the bank, Janet stood by Les as he pursued his career in Calgary. Eventually, Les retired and they briefly returned to his hometown in High River, Alberta. In the 1980s, Janet and Les ventured to Denman Island, BC. They purchased a plot of land and resided in a trailer for three years until their dream home was built, where Janet remained for the rest of her life. Eventually Janet and Les amicably separated and he moved to Vancouver mainland. Janet had a passion for gardening. She loved the island and its people, and they reciprocated by standing by her side during her valiant fight to remain in her beloved home. Janet's memory will be forever cherished by her brother Thomas (Dianne) of Regina and sister Della Tourangeau of Arnprior. She was predeceased by her parents Neil and Flora (Brennan), as well as her siblings James, Anne and Lloyd. The family would like to express their gratitude to Janet's friends on Denman Island, the compassionate care provided by the staff at The Views at St. Joseph's medical facility and the homecare workers of Island Home Support. A cremation has already taken place, and a celebration of Janet's life will be held at a later date in both Denman Island and Arnprior.
