Dorothy was born in Castor, Alberta Sept 1, 1910. She was the local teacher in the Elementary School and also taught in the Normal School System there for a number of years. In 1936 “Dot” married John Hubert Smith and moved to Quebec where “Jack” worked in the Gold Mines at Val d’Or. They travelled to Vancouver Island and settled in the Comox Valley on the Back Rd. (Valley View Dr. then) in 1940. Dorothy helped open the Downtown Credit Union with Myrtle Vickburg in the basement of the old Jail House in the late 1940’s.
Soon after, she began to raise a family, and dedicated herself to homemaking and child rearing. Dorothy was very involved in many groups around the Valley, especially St. Andrew’s Church and Church of St. John the Divine.
Dorothy is predeceased by “Jack”, her husband of 50 years, brothers Fred (Edna), Ernest (Verna), nephews Cliff and Tim.
Dorothy is survived by daughter Bonnie (Hugh) and son Ted, grandchildren Cynda, Sean, Sam (Hiromi) Cameron, Emily (Serge), Steven and Amy (Randy), great grandchildren Caiden, Dece, Ayla and Kene, nephews Ken (Wenda), Walter (Helen), nieces Muriel (Ron), Irene (Bob), Vera (Denny), Laura (Denny) and Elaine as well as many other dear family members and wonderful close friends.
A requiem service in her memory will be held on Sunday, July 3, 2011 at the Church of St. John the Divine, 579 5th St, Courtenay, @ 10 AM. High Tea after Service.
