Born in Calgary in 1941, to parents Thomas and Myrtle Barnes, they moved to the Burnaby area where he spent most of his younger years.
In 1958 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed in Bagotville, Quebec. There, he met and married Nicole (predeceased 1992). They had 4 children together; Tom, Janet (Jody), Helen (Schell) and Ron (Jennifer). In his last year of service he was transferred to CFB Comox where he was until he retired from the Military. He then became a painter by trade and in 1970 Bruce and his family settled in Cumberland, BC where he remained for all of his years. He was very proud of his accomplishments in the Painters Union and felt honoured to be a Lifetime Member, often showing off his hat and recognition pins.
Bruce had a passion for many types of sports and over the years he was a coach for little league baseball, ladies softball as well as minor hockey. He enjoyed listening to his music, camping, fishing and of course cruising around in his beloved Buick Riviera. Bruce had many stories to tell and would bring smiles to many with his wisdom and humour, especially when he wore his funny Christmas hats out and about over the last few years. He loved making people laugh and helping others was always something he took pride in.
Bruce is survived by his children, grandchildren (Paul, Scott, Bruce, Ashley (Jerrico), Cameron and Austin), great grandchildren (Rayne, Dante, Bryson, Abigail, Chrissylynn and Bentley) and his very dear friend Stephanie.
There will be a gathering to celebrate his life (date and location TBA). In lieu of flowers, donations maybe be made to Canadian Alzheimer's Society.
