John was born in 1939 to Fred and Pearl Pembrook in North East Oregon, where he grew up on a farm. After John graduated from Union High School, he went on to study meteorology at Oregon State University. John met the love of his life, Patricia, while they both attended OSU. They were married in 1960.
John graduated with a Master’s degree in meteorology with the full intent of becoming a weatherman, but at the time, any science degree could land a job in any science field, so he started working at Ford Aerospace in Newport Beach in the field of Optical Electrical Engineering (lasers and lenses) in the early 60s. John specifically looked for a job in sunny Southern California to get away from the winter snow in Oregon. When Ford Aerospace closed up shop he moved to Loral, and then to his most recent and most rewarding job at PVP Advanced EO Systems in Tustin, where he not only problem solved and invented anew, but also trained young engineers.
John and Pat were very much involved with the Mesa Verde United Methodist Church in Costa Mesa from the time they transplanted from Oregon. John was routinely on the church board and sung bass in the choir.
John took flying lessons in the 70s and sailing lessons in the 80s. He loved classical music, museums and walks in nature. He was an avid photographer and bird watcher. Science fiction, either in print or on the silver screen, was his go to for entertainment.
John is predeceased by his younger daughter Rose Pembrook, his sister Marge Webb, his wife Patricia Pembrook, and his elder grandson Arthur Pembrook.
John is survived by his elder daughter Helen Pembrook and his younger grandson Aren Pembrook.
I lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Mesa Verde United Methodist Church in Costa Mesa, CA.
