Our mom, Beverly Janet Smith was born in White, South Dakota on Aug. 17, 1921 to Maizie and Elmer Thayer. She grew up in White along with her two sisters, Francis Thayer Otterness, (deceased), Lola Thayer Paulson, (deceased), and her brother, Gale Thayer of Madison, South Dakota. She attended school in White, graduating from White High School in 1939. After graduation, she went on to attend South Dakota Beauty Academy in Sioux Falls, graduating in March, 1940. She opened her first beauty shop, "Beverly's Beauty Shop" in Watertown, South Dakota in 1945 and owned the shop for 8 years. Her motto was always, "If you are 40 and want to look 20, that's our business, if you are 20 and want to look 40, that's your business." On Sept. 14, 1953, she married our dad, Dale Smith, (deceased), who was a golf pro and greenskeeper. From Watertown, they moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, living there for a short time before leaving the fine state of South Dakota and moving to sunny Southern California. After moving around quite a bit, they finally settled in Costa Mesa. Our mom owned two beauty shops in Costa Mesa, both of which were called, "Beverly's Beauty Salon" and her motto remained the same. She also owned a "paint your own" plaster shop. Our mom loved ballroom dancing, playing what she called "kitten-ball" (softball), bowling, golf, doing hair, people and her kids. On August 15, 2013, our mom moved one more time to heaven to be with our Lord and Saviour. She is survived by her children, Janet Schones (Gary), James Smith, Mary Gerson (John) and Noel Smith; also 5 grandchildren, Joe, Rich (Wendy), Kara (Tony), Zane(Stephanie) and Jered and 6 great-grandchildren: Sarah, Levi, Hannah, Emma, Luke and Paige.
