Bill was born in Jewett, Ohio on July 2, 1939 to the late Louis F. and Miriam R. (Phillips) Hawk. He started working at an early age on the farm and in orchards. He also cut and hauled pulp wood and cardboard to the paper mill with his dad. In 1967 he started at Pretty Products, working in the mill room and retiring 38 and a half years later from the shipping department at the warehouse. On January 7, 1977 he married Ruth E. Durben, who preceded him in death on May 9, 2003.
Bill enjoyed raising various farm animals, gardening, cooking, coloring, and tinkering with old cars and farm machinery. He was also an avid OSU fan. He loved his animals, especially his cats and dogs. He enjoyed telling his stories and never met a stranger. He was known as “Wild Bill” and “the Gentle Giant.”
Bill is survived by a daughter, Catherine “Cathy” E. Hawk and her companion, Frank E. Adkins, Sr., two sisters, Martha (George) Green and Cynthia (Myron) Baker, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Along with his wife and parents, Bill is preceded in death by his companion of 11 years, Clita Priode, also known as “TT.”
Funeral services for Bill will be held at Given-Dawson Funeral Home on Friday, March 4, 2016 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dave Boots officiating Burial will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Newcomerstown. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and an hour prior to the service on Friday.
