Sue Fussell McCall passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on November 10, 2022. Born on August 8, 1930 to James Horace “Jack” and Lula Belle Fussell in Knoxville, Tennessee, Sue was the youngest of four children. Sue grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee where she met her husband, George P. “Buster” McCall. They were married on September 2, 1950 in Chattanooga and moved to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1954. Sue and George had three children, Steve, Scott, and Sally. Shortly after their young Family moved to California in 1962, George prematurely passed away, and Sue and their three young children returned to Corpus Christi where they were lovingly surrounded by their Laudadio-McCall Family and by many Friends. Sue chose to stay in Corpus Christi so that her children would know and be close to their father’s family while remaining extremely close to her Tennessee family. Sue and her kids would travel to Tennessee every summer to spend several weeks with her brothers, cousins, nieces and nephews in Chattanooga and Nashville, Tennessee.
Sue worked for the federal government for nearly 30 years. She retired as the Deputy Clerk-in-Charge of the US District Court, Southern District of Texas in 1990 and was referred to as “Best Boss Ever” by many of her employees.
Sue loved her family and loved to travel. She traveled with her children and grandchildren extensively while the grandchildren were young. After retirement, she traveled by motor home throughout the United States with her brothers and sisters-in-law and traveled all over the world with her cousin and cohort, Daisy Eatherly of Dickson, Tennessee.
Sue is affectionately remembered for her infectious laugh and positive attitude, her homemade ice cream (which she brought and cranked by hand at Family backyard cookouts), and for graciously welcoming Family and Friends to her home over the years. Sue often reflected that some of her favorite things in life were holding babies, enjoying a glass of wine with Family and Friends, and adventures traveling. Sue was an avid reader, loved to walk and enjoyed working the New York Times cross word puzzle every week.
In recent years, at Vierra Senior Living, Sue brought much sunshine to others as she walked the hallways each day, always with a smile on her face. In spite of growing health challenges, Sue continued spreading her cheerful optimism to others. Her life has been a testimony to loving kindness and gentle strength. Sue was loved by many and will be truly missed by all who loved her.
Sue is survived by her children, Steve “George” McCall, Scott McCall and Sally Lucas, her daughter-in-laws Sheree McCall and Lynne McCall, her grandchildren, Johnny Lucas, III (Heather), Kaylie Lucas, Christian Lucas, Sarah Niehaus (Drew), Stephanie Greengarten (Marc), Will McCall (Tracy), Amanda McCall, Ian McCall, Anna Evans (Alan), and 17 great grandchildren. Sue was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Johnny Lucas.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Corpus Christi at a future date.
