Mary Elizabeth (Largin) Wren Christmas Child – 1915-2013 Mary Wren, age 97, went to her home in heaven October 10, 2013. Her daughter, Betsy, was singing hymns to her as she met the Lord Jesus. She was peaceful and prepared for a life of eternal glory. Like Jesus, she was a “Christmas Child”, born on Christmas Day, 1915, in Cleburne, Texas, to O.W. and Clara Largin. She grew up in a Christian home and graduated from Wichita Falls High in 1933. Her marriage to the Reverend Floyd G. Wren was on April 14, 1934, First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls TX. Mary graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Corpus Christi in 1955 where she was a student leader and Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. During this time she was making a home and raising four children. She taught at Austin Elementary School for twenty six years, retiring in 1981. Her legacy was teaching poor and underprivileged children. Many were touched by her care, concern, and brilliance as an educator. She was a Baptist Youth leader, WMU president, Pastor’s wife and Sunday school teacher. Her beautiful soprano voice was a blessing to every choir and church service. She was President of the Daughters of the Nile Choir and served as Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. She packed dozens of gift boxes for Operation Christmas Child every year, and supported many other humanitarian causes during her long life. After retirement she became a well-known oil painter. Her paintings of flowers, Padre Island, Hill country Bluebonnets, and the Mountain West were extraordinary. Mary loved traveling and visited all fifty states. She enjoyed studying the family genealogy and complied a complete family tree with photo albums. We all admired her considerable intellect. This bright lady still did the daily Crossword and Suduku at age 97. She loved reading, shopping, advising her children, and praising the Lord. Her incredible life is a testament to what a determined woman, with little means, can achieve. She is a shining example for every young woman to follow. We will miss the smile, wit, and charm of this fine Texas woman. But most of all, the loving touch she had on our lives. Truly, her long life made the world a better place. Hand-in-hand with her beloved Floyd, she will watch over us from her place in Heaven.
