On Sunday, December 10th, 2017, a beautiful yet non-typical day for Corpus Christi, Texas, it was cool with touches of melting snow from an unlikely winter snowfall. Heaven gained an angel at 3:22pm in the presence of her daughters and family.
“Mary Lou” (as she was known by most that knew her) was born in Hebbronville, Texas on August 2nd, 1940. Her parents Huell Glenn Allen and Connie Mae Garrett were proud of their little girl. She was the youngest of three siblings, Huell Glenn Allen, Jr. (“Shorty”) (Deceased) and Connie Maydell Allen (“sister”) (Ingleside, Texas). She lived in various cities and towns in South Texas until finally settling down in Corpus Christi. She graduated from Roy Miller High School and soon thereafter met and married Lionel (Lonnie) Ray Sauers in 1957. “Mary Lou” and “Lonnie” both worked hard and were successful in their business endeavors in Corpus Christi. They had three beautiful daughters they both loved beyond measure. Mary Lou worked for Margolis Shoes for four years then went to work for the city of Corpus Christi Tax and Utility Office. Mary Lou worked several different jobs after that and one included a stint at the original downtown Lichtenstein’s Department Store. Many friends will know Mary Lou from her successful years of owning a local “watering hole” known to so many throughout South Texas simply as McCaw’s. For all practical purposes it was a local Corpus Christi “Cheers”. Mary Lou loved her times at McCaw’s visiting with old friends and constantly making new ones. It truly was a place where “everybody knew HER name”! From friends and family to shuffle board, or a band or two, Mary Lou had an ever-present love for football, that included the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas A&M Aggies. McCaw’s really was a place to be. As life’s journey continued Mary Lou met and married Joe Douglass. Mary Lou was amazing in a sense that she remained close to Lonnie and to Joe in her later years regardless of the path that life took her. She enjoyed leasing apartments at the Kingston Port Apartments, which she did until the day she left us. There was no retiring in Mary Lou. She was proud of being able to work, have an active social life, and take care of her cat which was affectionately named, “Baby Girl”. Mary Lou had three very special friends that were like sisters in a sense. Regardless of age differences or physical distances between them, she loved her time with “Mama Faye”, Julie Park, and Linda Odem.
Mary Lou loved the time she spent watching her football and the simple, but regular dinners with family. More than anything she loved family and loved to listen to Carol play the piano. She was so proud of her daughters and their children and in the last year she had been blessed with her first great grandson Bennett. The joy she got from sending him books was simply impossible to put in words.
She is survived by her immediate and loving family; her eldest daughter, Melinda Sauers Bagby, (Jamie Bagby, Brittany (Bagby) Bell and husband Michael (great grandson Bennett), and Corey Bagby), her middle daughter Kimberley Sauers Newhouse and husband Michael (Shelby Newhouse, Taylor (Newhouse) Leahy and husband Benjamin, and Kendall Newhouse) and her baby daughter Dawn Sauers (Randall Hicks) (Chandler Sauers). Each will miss Mary Lou “aka Grandmama” in their own special way.
Mary Lou will be missed, but never forgotten by a host of friends and family that will see her again.
Love you to the Moon mom.
