She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Earnest Lee Morrow; mother, Mary Lee Screws; and father G. W. Screws, Sr.
Mary was a much-loved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She was mother to Vickie Lynn Shanks Gandy (Ed), Patricia Ann Garcia (Ronnie), Michael Allen Morrow. Sister to G W Screws and Edward Arch Screws. Grandmother to Erin (Vickie), Katrina (Michael), Jacob (Patricia), Joshua (Patricia), Michaela (Michael) and many loved nieces and nephews. Great-grandmother to Stella and Evie (Erin).
Mary grew up on a small farm in Tennessee, while attending school she helped her mother care for their home and worked in a Grist Mill. She put herself through Lab Tech Training School by sewing prom dresses from a self-made pattern and making alterations to band and majorette uniforms. One of her daughter’s favorite memories is the school dresses she handmade for them each year. The dresses would be similar with small changes to make them unique for each daughter. Mary was a great made-from-scratch cook, teaching her children to cook and sew from a young age. Their family favorites were meatloaf and banana pudding.
Mary was raised in the Southern Baptist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She had a close personal relationship with her Lord and talked with him daily. She was a career Navy wife for 23 years while she and her children followed her husband across the United States from California to Florida. As a result of her husband’s military service away and overseas, Mary raised her three children primarily on her own and during her spare time helped in her children’s schools, as a church bookkeeper and church nursery aid. When possible, she would organize family vacations which were camping and fishing trips to the beach or mountains. These were great times in the outdoors together; cooking over an open fire, collecting sassafras for tea, swimming, and lots of fishing.
A graveside service for Mary will be held Monday, April 8, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Memory Gardens Funeral Home & Cemetery, 8200 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, Texas 78415.
