Mario G. Ramón, 75, of Houston, Texas, passed away on August 12, 2024 in his home. He was born in Alice, Texas on May 11, 1949, to parents Guadalupe and Anita Ramón. He graduated from Mary Carroll High School in 1967, and was married to Rosa Lee Ramón (Voight) on August 16, 1968 in Corpus Christi. He went on to work at a refinery in Corpus Christi (Coastal States Gas Refinery), moved to Houston to work for Atlantic Richfield (ARCO), graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Environmental Management (Magna cum laude) in the year 1981, then received his Masters of Science degree (on the dean’s list), also in Environmental Management, in 1983. Both his undergraduate and graduate degrees were completed at the University of Houston. Eventually, he was hired with Vastar. He and Rosa were transferred, temporarily, to Lafayette, LA, then transferred again, after a couple of years, into the Katy area. With Vastar, he traveled across the country to inspect refineries for regulatory and governmental compliance. He always felt very rewarded to have this career in the field of Environmental Engineering, and after 30 years of dedicated service, he retired.
Along the way, Mario and Rosa had two children. Their first, Mario Arnóldo Ramón, born on January 13, 1969, continues to live in the Houston area with his wife Yvette Perez (Ramon). Their second child, Dr. Alva Natalie Ramón, born October 19, 1971, currently lives with her husband Donald R. Meier and their son Aldon, in the Panama City Beach area.
In Mario’s years, he has enjoyed: travel (five trips to Hawaii, Cozumel, Cancun, Puerta Vallarta, and other tropical beach locations); his boat; fishing with Rosa, his brother Sam, and many other friends; golfing around the country; golfing with all his good buddies; deer hunting across the US; his t-bird; his corvette (along with the ‘San Jacinto Corvette club,’ traveling to several destinations with them to golf, shop, and dine out together); and lastly, playing his saxophone in the orchestra at church, as well as other venues and events.
Throughout his years, he has volunteered himself for a number of services to others. He drove a big yellow school bus, for many years, picking up children in the neighborhoods surrounding Forest Oaks Baptist church, in Houston, for Sunday services, where he and his family attended. He was a ‘den dad’ for the Boyscouts of America, played softball for various churches and his company, ARCO. He was a baseball coach. He and Rosa were advocates for rehabilitating wild animals, with the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Coalition.
He is survived in death by his wife, Rosa, where he and her would be celebrating 56 years of marriage on the 16th of August (four days after his passing). For years, their tradition has been to have dinner at Taste of Texas, where they would enjoy a juicy steak, which they shared, with all the trimmings.
Mario leaves his cherished grandchildren, Clarisa, Mario, and Aldon, and great grandchildren, Camila, Sofia, and Emma. Also, he leaves behind his sister Linda, and baby brother, Andy. His other beloved sibling, Samuel, passed away in 2016, and his loving mother, Anita, in 2023, (at 93 years of age).
His laugh, huge smile, kind and encouraging words, and other endearing qualities, will always be remembered by all of us who loved him so dearly.
Visitation for Mario will be held at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Memory Gardens Funeral Home. A Funeral Celebration will follow at 2 PM. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
