John Wesley Jones was born in the Township of New Bloomfield, in Perry County, Pennsylvania, on November 26, 1933. He passed away on Friday, January 4, 2023, in Corpus Christi, Texas. John married Tommie Lue Hannaman of Elk City, Oklahoma, on November 20, 1953, in Corpus Christi, where they settled after John was stationed there in the U.S. Navy. John was a loving husband of 55 years and a loving father to five sons, Danny, Tommy, Donald, Michael and John. He was a devoted Christian and member of First Baptist Church of Ingleside, Texas. He often attended service at First Baptist Church in Corpus Christi, as well.
John was an adventurer in life. He graduated from a small rural high school in Pennsylvania in 1951, at the age of 17, and by early 1952, John had arrived by train at the Union Pacific Depot in Corpus Christi where he began his U.S. military service. In addition to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, John served as an aircraft mechanic on Midway Island in the North Pacific Ocean. John began his nearly 29 year career as a law enforcement officer with the Corpus Christi Police Department in 1962. He retired from the Police Department as a lieutenant in 1990. After retirement, John, always known for his strong work ethic, held jobs with the Nueces County Sheriff’s Department, Federal Court Security agency, and finally, Koinonia Apartments. John left his last official job at age 83. Throughout his life, he volunteered for many construction projects at every church where he was a member, and some where he was just a friend. With genuine and abiding confidence in God, John was resilient in the face of his life’s trials and tribulations.
John was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend, preceded in death by his parents: Wesley Todd Jones and Catherine Malinda (Richardson) Jones; two sons: Donald Lee Jones and Thomas Wesley Jones; siblings: Paul, Lenus, Richard, Clara, Ross, and James; and great grandson, Thomas Wesley Jones, II.
John is survived by his sister, Edith Alberta Jones of New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania; three loving sons: Danny Ray Jones (Libby) of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Michael Alan Jones (Cheryl) of Corpus Christi, and John Jacob Jones of Rockport, Texas; 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild, Cash Wesley Jones.
Visitation is from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 8200 Old Brownsville Road. Memorial service will be on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church, 3115 Ocean Drive, Corpus Christi, Texas. Graveside service to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
