Guadalupe Fernando Valdez passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on February 24, 2022. He was 91 years old. Dad was born to Ynez and Genoveva Valdez on the Frijolillo Ranch in Duval County, Texas, on November 14, 1930. He was preceded in death by all 10 of his siblings.
As a child, Dad enjoyed playing baseball with his brothers and nephew, and helping his parents around the ranch, planting and picking cotton and corn, and milking cows. He was a faithfully devoted son and son-in-law, often tending to his elders’ needs after starting his own family. As a young adult, he also enjoyed going to local dances with his brothers, where he ultimately met his future wife, Dolores Garza.
In 1952, he enlisted in the US Army and received the National Defense Service Medal. Upon completing his military service, he married Dolores, and they moved to Corpus Christi. Lupe and Dolores raised their four children, Aleyda (Paul Campos), Lupe Jr. (Charlotte Valdez), Yvette, and Margot in the Catholic Church as parishioners at Holy Family, Christ the King, and ultimately Our Lady of Pilar.
Dad was a hardworking home builder and took great pride in his work. He completed trade school at Del Mar College and built his own successful construction company, V & V Builders, with his brothers Ynez and Americo. They built premium homes and business structures in Corpus and surrounding areas. Dad often went to work before sunrise and returned home after the sun had set, covered in a thick layer of sawdust. After retiring from his construction business, dad enjoyed working for the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach for several years.
In his later years, Dad could often be found with mom in the bleachers cheering on their grandchildren at their sporting events, or at a local restaurant enjoying a leisurely breakfast. His six grandchildren (Kristine, Eric, Miguel, Mia, Antonio, Joshua, and great-grandson Elijah) were his pride and joy.
Dad possessed an incredible combination of strength, generosity, and kindness, and throughout his life, he exhibited abiding faith in God and gratitude for all of his blessings. He loved his wife and family, and we will miss our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
