He was very proud of his athletic accomplishments at Mary Carroll High School. He participated in football and track. He was all district quarterback in 1970. He still holds Top 10 Records for passing and running yards. He also played football at Cisco Jr. College and McMurray University. He graduated from McMurray University with a BS in Education/Health and Mathematics. He also graduated from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi with a Master of Science in Education and Administration. He taught and coached in Corpus Christi ISD, as well as San Antonio ISD, serving communities for over 35 years.
He and his wife enjoyed dancing, gardening, visiting wineries, watching Oscar nominated movies, watching the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Astros, hosting Super Bowl parties, traveling and going to Broadway plays. He also had a passion for golf and loved playing with his lifetime friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents Guadalupe Gutierrez and Angelita Gutierrez. Guadalupe leaves behind loving memories to his wife Josephine Yvette Pena Gutierrez; daughters, Lori Denise Gutierrez, (Ida Pacheco), Lyndi DeVon Gutierrez (Michael Fuentes); grandchildren, Jordan Michael Fuentes, Madison Fuentes, Joshua Matthew Chapa, Victoria Katherine Chapa; sister Lucinda Miller; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Memory Gardens Funeral Home. A Holy Rosary will be recited that same night at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 13, 2023, at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, where services will conclude.
