Angelina “Angie” Rodriguez Gonzales, our dear mother, sister, cousin, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and dear wife of Asención “Chon” Gonzales, left her earthly home in the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 26, 2023. She was 84 years old and passed away peacefully in her sleep, at her home in Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas.
Angie is survived by her beloved husband Asencion “Chon” Gonzales and their children: Lillian (John) Roh, Raul (Millie) Gonzales, José (Evelyn) Gonzales, Shawn (Belinda) Gonzales, Jerry Gonzales, and Debra Anderson Gonzales. She is the grandmother to 22 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
Angie was the second child born to Honore and Ofilia Lopez Rodríguez on January 20, 1939; she was born at home with the assistance of a midwife, Generosa. She grew up with seven brothers and sisters: Armando, Raul, Honore Jr., Ruben, Eliberto “Eddie,” Juanita “Janie,” and Johanna. It was a great family of eight children, including five brothers and three sisters.
Angie had a life full of love, family, adventure, music, and beautiful culture. She could play and keep up with her four brothers and would compete equally well with them in baseball. Her best friend was her tia Alicia who she would do everything with. They were great singers and learned early from her tios. Angie grew up going to school and living the life of a migrant family and living and working throughout the United States.
Angie learned to sew from her Grandma Flora, who was a professional seamstress. Sewing became her passion. She sewed everything from blouses, shorts, skirts, and dresses – formal and informal. She went on to crochet baby booties, Christmas ornaments, baby blankets, pillow cases, and handkerchiefs. She also embroidered many beautiful things for her home, family, and friends.
Angie was introduced to the gospel of JESUS CHRIST at a very young age and entered the waters of baptism on October 10, 1948. She met the love of her life at church when Chon and her were in their teens. They were married on March 17, 1959. After this beautiful union, they sealed their love for time and all eternity in the Mesa, Arizona temple in 1960.
Angie and Chon then became a team and lived a life full of love and service to their six children, to the gospel, and to their community. They are and will remain to be an exemplary couple who survived through trials, health, and illness, as well as joys and happiness.
