Mrs. Alice K. Williams was born on March 6, 1930, to Reverend Doctor James E. Coby, Sr. and Gussie Powell Coby, in Marshall, Texas. She attended Park Elementary School, H.B. Pemberton High School and graduated at the age of 16. She continued her higher education at Bishop College in Marshall, Texas, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Education.
Alice married Lewis Williams, Jr. on February 18, 1950, in Marshall, Texas. In 1951, after having their first child, Wynette Y. Johnson, they relocated to Corpus Christi, Texas, where they began building a life together. They later had two more children: Darvina H. Davis in 1953 and Alys K. Williams in 1963. Alice began working as a substitute teacher in the Corpus Christi Independent School District in 1960. In 1966, she accepted her first teaching job as an English teacher at Northside Junior High School. She continued her career at Solomon Coles and retired from Cullen Middle School in 1992, dedicating 26+ years to the field of education, the students, the parents, and community of Corpus Christi.
Alice accepted Christ and was baptized an early age at Bethesda Baptist Church in Marshall, Texas. She was active in the children and youth activities, such as singing in the choir, attending Sunday School, and attending BTU. After moving to Corpus Christi, she and her family united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where Reverend Hicks was the pastor. She sang in the choir, worked in Sunday School, and was a faithful member of the Women’s Mission Ministry. In 1997, she and her family united with Rising Star Baptist Church, where Reverend Mark Stewart is the pastor. Again, she was a faithful member and was involved in Sunday School and the Women’s Mission Ministry. Before she became ill and at the time of her death, she was a member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptish Church, where Reverend Claude C. Axel is the pastor, and was again active in Sunday School and the Women’s Mission Ministry.
Mrs. Alice K. Williams is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Reverend James E. Coby, Sr. and Mrs. Gussie Powell Coby; her sisters, Verdell McAfee and Dorothy Danner; one brother James E. Coby, Jr.; two daughters Darvina H. Davis and Dr. Wynette Y. Johnson. She is survived by one daughter, Dr. Alys K. (William F. Thomas, Sr.) Williams, of Corpus Christi. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Rev. Willie C. (Desiree) Davis, Jr., Nashae Y. (Charles) Strickland, and Pernell S. “Pjay” (Miranda Hinojosa) Knox, Jr., all of Corpus Christi, Texas; Antionette L. Davis of Houston, Texas; Andrea Y. (Jeffery) Ledet of Cypress, Texas; Rev. Lewis L. Johnson of San Antonio, Texas; Alysia W. (Christopher) Arrue of West Palm Beach, Florida; twelve great-grandchildren: Darvin Davis, Keiona Norfleet, Kylan Williams, Janiah Ledet, Janius Ledet, Josiahs Ledet, Kamyran Johnson, Lewis-William Johnson, Landen Johnson, Jayda Arrue, Angelo Arrue, and Ava Arrue; one Goddaughter, Ericka Sample of Norfolk, Virginia, and a host of relatives and friends.
A public visitation for Alice will be held Sunday, March 26, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 8200 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, Texas 78415. A funeral service will occur Monday, March 27, 2023 at 10:00 AM, 8200 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, Texas 78415. An entombment will occur Monday, March 27, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 8200 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, Texas 78415.
