Alan was a devoted husband, father and teacher. Since 1998, he taught philosophy, logic and ethics at Del Mar College, where he served for five years as chairman of the English Department. In addition to Del Mar, Alan taught at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, University of Incarnate Word, St. Leo University and Blinn College.
He often said he never worked a day in his life because he loved teaching and the thousands of students who passed through his classes over the years. His students have described him as “absolutely amazing”, “caring, inspiring and hilarious” and “the most interesting man on Earth”. In his classes, there was “never a dull moment”, and he often wove colorful stories about his family into the discussions.
At home, Alan’s driveway, garage – and sometimes even his bathtub – housed vintage BMW motorcycles or Volkswagens in various stages of restoration. He wore a Volkswagen tattoo under his left sleeve. When he wasn’t rebuilding a motorcycle, he was tracing his family’s history back to Scotland, Lithuania and native America, making contact with distant relatives all over the world.
From his earliest years, he was a natural entertainer, putting everyone around him at ease and in a constant state of LOL.
Alan was born on Aug. 22, 1970 in Somers Point, NJ, to Alan and Joan Clark. He received his bachelor’s degree from Southwest Missouri State University and master’s degree in philosophy from Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. He married Melanie Carreon on November 29, 2008 in Corpus Christi, where together they have raised their daughter Lily Rene. Alan also has a son, August, and daughter, Laurel who live in Missouri. In addition to his immediate family, Alan is survived by his mother and father, brother Scott, and sisters Sheryl and Bonnie. He was preceded in death by his sister Laurie.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, July 21, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 8200 Old Brownsville Road in Corpus Christi. A celebration will be held immediately following in at Retama Room at Del Mar College.
