Marsh was born on December 4, 1946 to S. Robert and Kathryn Lau Tanner of St. George, Utah. After graduating from Arcadia High School in 1964, he went on to study English at Brigham Young University, where he found and married his sweetheart, Colleen Bonner.
From 1966 to 1968, Marsh served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Brazil Mission.
He served in the US Navy from 1970 to 1974 as an Air Intelligence Officer, often deployed on the carrier USS Saratoga.
Upon completion of his military service, Marsh attended law school at UCLA, receiving a Juris Doctor in 1977. He practiced corporate and real estate transactional law and handled international matters as a partner at several prominent law firms.
After retiring from his professional practice, he worked for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Office of General Counsel. He served as an Area Legal Counsel in Brazil from 2005-2008. He later served in Salt Lake City as Regional Legal Counsel from 2013 until he retired in 2019.
He served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a bishop and stake president and as a mission president in Campinas, Brazil.
Marsh and Colleen were married for 53 years, welcoming 5 sons and 2 daughters into their family. He is our beloved husband, father and grandfather, and he will be greatly missed.
Marsh was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Kathryn, and by his son, Douglas James Tanner. He is survived by his wife, Colleen, his children, David (Angee), Brent (Kristine), Julie (Adam), Glenn (Kirsten), Scott (Megan), and Holly (Jarom), as well as his 25 grandchildren.
The Tanner Family invites friends and family to join them for a funeral service on Monday, February 6 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5402 Heil Ave., Huntington Beach CA. Close family and friends are welcome to join a viewing at the chapel preceding the funeral service at 9:45 AM.
