He was born in Glidden, IA and raised on the family farm in Lanesboro, IA. The youngest of two boys, he went to school in a one room schoolhouse.
He graduated from High School in 1947 and went to the University of Iowa, and graduated in 1954 with his medical degree in Internal Medicine. He never missed a Hawkeye football game. Richard went to Korea as a Capitan (Physician) in the Army ROTC. He met his future wife, Betty Archuletta, at Orange County Hospital (now UCI Medical Center). They married June 18, 1960. He held a private practice and worked for State of California facilities before finally retiring from Fairview State Hospital in Costa Mesa, CA in1995.
They had a son Samuel (deceased) and daughter Jennifer. He had five grandkids: Vanessa and Sam Jr (called J.R. by the family) via Sam (Violet) and Griffin, Sasha and Declan via Jennifer (Barron). He also had four great-grandkids: Johnny, Sophia, Alejandro, and Isaiah. He is also survived by his older brother Marvin (Darlene) brothers-in-law Adam (Thelma) and Joseph and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
His family, especially the grandkids, meant the world to him.
Betty passed away Christmas morning, 2004. They are together again at last.
He will be missed.
